Background: The victim, Jose Solis, was shot and killed by John A. Castro, on November 27, 2011 after a fight on the 4th floor of the Quality Inn, 110 E. 4th Ave.  Solis had been performing at a rap concert at Ichiban's in downtown Spokane earlier in the evening.  A fight broke out after the concert so the bar owner kicked all the patrons out of the bar.  Solis and his friends from Moses Lake were staying at the Quality Inn and were hosting an "after hours" party.  Castro and his friends decided to attend the party, but when they walked into the hotel room, they were asked to leave.

Castro's group confronted Solis' friends in the hallway on the 4th floor and a physical fight broke out.  Two victims suffered severe lacerations to their heads from beer bottles, thrown by Castro's group.  The fight ended by Castro shooting and killing Solis.

The suspects fled the scene in a Cadillac Escalade When officers attempted to stop the Cadillac near 7th and Hatch, the occupants fled the car.  Castro was arrested on foot in the area.
