Pact Puts New Congressional Seat Around Olympia

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - A plan to redraw Washington's congressional districts would anchor the state's new district around Olympia.

The proposal released Wednesday would also create a majority-minority 9th District in the Seattle area. To make room for the new 10th District, negotiators dramatically reshaped districts on the western side of the state. The 1st District vacated by Democratic Rep. Jay Inslee now stretches into the rural northwest parts of the state, making it more competitive.

Republican Rep. Dave Reichert's district is pushed to the east, making it more conservative. The plan was put together by a Democratic commissioner and a Republican one. At least one of the other two commissioners must agree on the maps and approve them by a New Year's Day deadline.

Washington gained a new congressional seat after a decade of population growth.
