Haystack Fires In Grant County Ruled Arson

MATTAWA, Wash. - Grant County Sheriff's Deputies are asking the public for help solving two haystack fires near Mattawa over the past 10 days.

Deputies and Grant County Fire Dist. #8 firefighters have responded to two separate fires. The first, a strawstack fire, happened around 10:45 p.m. on Dec. 20 near County Roads L and 28-Southwest. The second fire happened around 12:15 a.m. on Dec. 29 destroying two stacks of alfalfa hay near County Roads O and 25-Southwest. Both fires caused over $100,000 in losses and damage.

Investigators have found no natural or accidental reason for these fires and are investigating them as arson until further determined.

Deputies are interested in any information about suspicious persons or vehicles seen in the area, and also any information on discoveries of attempted fire-starting evidence near other haystacks.

Anyone with information should call the Grant County Sheriff's Office at 509-762-1160 or send information to crimetips@co.grant.wa.us. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
