Early Morning Police Chase Near Lewiston Sends Suspect To Hospital

LEWISTON, Idaho - Four different law enforcement agencies, including the Idaho State Police, were involved in a high speed chase early Monday morning.

The Lewiston Police Department aired an attempt to find a suicidal subject. ISP Trooper Travis Hight located the car southbound on US 95 near Lewiston. Trooper Hight attempted to stop the car but the driver did not pull over. During the pursuit Trooper Hight observed the vehicle being driven in an erratic manner while driving in oncoming lanes.

The driver eventually crashed the car near milepost 286. After the crash, the driver was able to commandeer another car from Elizabeth Braun of Nez Perce, Idaho. ISP Trooper Larsen used a spike strip a short time later and managed to flatten the right rear tire. Eventually the driver crashed into a ditch.

The driver, Sheldon Blancher Stamper of Clarkston, was taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Cottonwood with minor injuries.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
