New Fire Station Used In Wednesday Airway Heights Blaze

AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. - A mobile home at the Gonzalez Mobile Home and R-V Park on South Geiger erupted into flames on Wednesday. Crews were able to quickly knock it down, but the mobile home was declared a total loss.

Fortunately no one was home at the time of the fire and there were no reports of injuries to anyone involved. A cause is under investigation, but for one of the responding fire stations, this was the first chance to work with some new equipment out of a new place.

As of January 1st the Spokane Fire Department is now responsible for fighting the fires of the West Plains, which means they're now taking on 10 additional square miles. The new property is actually on the airports land.

The department is leasing it for only a dollar plus some additional services that the fire department will provide to the airport. The agreement is for five years so the department will look at a few factors like growth and the road network to determine if the new station will be its long term home.
