Man Critically Injured Saving Drunk From Train

HUFFINGTONPOST.COM - A good Samaritan is in critical condition after saving a drunk from being hit by a Staten Island train, The Staten Island Advance reports.

Steven Santiago , 39, saw an intoxicated man trying to retrieve a shoe that had fallen on the tracks at the New Dorp station at about 1:30AM. When he saw the man couldn't get back up onto the platform, Santiago jumped down to help him. That's when a Tottenville-bound train came into the station with both men still on the tracks.

Somehow the drunk man escaped with minor injuries. Santiago, however, was hit in the head by the train and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

"He is in a pretty bad shape right now," his brother,Edwin Santiago, told The New York Daily News. "I leave it in God's hands."

In August a drunk man fell on the tracks at the Dekalb L stop in Bushwick, Brooklyn. After alerting officials and while waiting for EMTS to arrive, a heroic MTA worker managed to push him back up on the platform with the help of some waiting passengers.

A recent study found that 42 percent of the 76 people killed by New York City subway trains between 2003 and 2006 had been drinking, and most of the accidents occurred around 4AM when the city's bars close.
