ODESSA, Wash. - A local 5th grader is considered a hero Wednesday night after risking his own life to save a dog that had fallen though an iced over pond.
Ilan Toberly and his friend were walking home from school after an early release Wednesday afternoon when a neighbors dog following them went out onto a frozen pond and fell through the ice.
Ilan's friend went for help, Ilan jumped in.
Even after falling through the ice into the freezing water, Ilan had one thing on his mind, saving his neighbor's six-year-old Mastiff-cross named Coda.
Ilan made sure the dog made it home before going home himself.
Coda's owner couldn't believe the story of the brave 5th grader that saved her 165-pound dog.
After a hot bath, a still shivering Ilan and his mom came over to check up Coda, giving the dog owner a chance to say thank you.
The boy and the dog are both safe and warm at home.
Ilan's mom says she is extremely proud of her little boy but told him to never do that again.
