Longfellow Elementary Student Approached By Man

KHQ.COM - On Wednesday afternoon a Longfellow Elementary student reported being approached by a man on the way home from school. The school tells KHQ they immediately called the district resource officer and the Spokane police department to report the incident.

The incident occurred within a block of the school. The student said that he was wearing a knee-length black coat with a hood pulled up and asked her to come with him because her mom was in the hospital. If you know anything more than can help authorities you're asked to call Crime Check immediately at 465-2233.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FROM LONGFELLOW:

Since student safety is our paramount concern, we have asked teachers to talk with students about walking with a buddy and stranger danger.  We need your help too.  Please remind your student of some general safety practices:

Develop a plan for what your child should do if approached by a stranger and remind him/her of the following:

  • Don't approach strangers who call out.  Keep a distance or walk away and do not accept candy or gifts from strangers.
  • Have a special code word that someone would know if there was an emergency so that your child would know they are safe and approved by you.
  • Never get in the car with a stranger or go with anyone who asks for directions or help.
  • Run straight home, to school, or to someone you know if they are scared.

STEVENS COUNTY, Wash. - It's been nearly two years since anyone has seen or heard from Paul Brazeau. He was last seen at his son's wedding. His brokenhearted family reached out to KHQ's Hayley Guenthner with a letter asking for his case to be featured in our Q6 Cold Case series. The day Paul vanished started out so wonderful. "It was a happy day," said Paul's aunt Georgine Glatt.
