After escaping from Geiger Corrections Center Tuesday evening, Rachel Banks and Kathleen Stockton were taken into custody within an hour after breaking a window and scaling the Corrections Center's fence.

Both Banks and Stockton were treated at a local hospital after receiving multiple lacerations, some life threatening, from the razor wire atop the facility's fence line. In addition to the lacerations, Banks broke her ankle during the escape attempt.

Banks and Stockton are now both housed in the Spokane County Jail awaiting their court appearance for 1st Degree Escape.

During the investigation and capture of the escapees, deputies determined Troy A. Scheiber, 43 and 46-year-old Judith A. Scheiber attempted to aid Banks and Stockton. Deputies believe Troy and Judith provide clothing and planed to give Stockton and Banks a ride out of the area. Troy and Judith were arrested and booked into the Spokane County Jail for Rendering Criminal Assistance 2^nd Degree.

While Geiger Corrections Center only houses low level inmates that don't pose a threat to the community, this incident is another illustration of the problems associated with housing inmates in a facility that isn't designed for that purpose. The staff assigned to Geiger Corrections do an amazing job with the resources they've been given.

Temporary security measures were put in place immediately following the incident. The facility administrators will be considering options for more permanent measures, knowing that the only real fix is to build a replacement facility.

The Spokane County Board of County Commissioners continue to iron out the details and site selection for a replacement facility before bringing the issue before the public in a ballot measure. While no one enjoys proposing a new detention facility, and the public certainly does not enjoy paying for them, the problem of overcrowding and the use of substandard facilities still exist.

AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. - A pair of female inmates escaped from the Geiger Corrections Center Monday night, but were apprehended within an hour in a manhunt that involved law enforcement resources from the corrections center, Spokane County Sheriff's Office, Spokane Police Dept., Washington State Patrol, Spokane Airport Police and Airway Heights Police Department.

Kathleen Stockton, 49, and Rachel A. Banks, 25, escaped about 7:20 p.m. Monday by climbing the correction center's security fence. Law Enforcement was alerted to the escape when one of the women asked someone at the Airway Express on Geiger Boulevard for help securing a ride. The woman had bloody hands and face, and was wearing only one shoe.  She told the employee she had "jumped the fence" at the correction's center.

Banks was captured at Geiger and Electric at about 7 p.m. and Stockton was arrested about 7:20 p.m. A male and female were detained by deputies for questioning as possible conspirators in the women's escape.  Their identities were being withheld pending further investigation. 

Stockton was currently being held on a felony charge of Possession of Controlled Substance.  Banks was arrested this month on counts of Residential Burglary and Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle.

Both women were injured as they used a blanket as a shield when they climbed over razor wire atop the outside security fence at Geiger Corrections. Banks suffered numerous puncture wounds and lacerations, and may have suffered a broken ankle as well. Stockton suffered numerous cuts and punctures.  Both were transported to a downtown hospital for treatment prior to  being booked back into the primary downtown jail.

Both Banks and Stockton now face additional felony charges of First-Degree Escape.

The matter remains under investigation.

AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. - Law Enforcement officers from the Kalispel Tribe, Airway Heights Police Department, Spokane International Airport Police, Spokane County Sheriff's Department, Spokane Police Department, and Washington State Patrol managed to set up a perimeter in the Airway Heights area and capture two escaped female inmates from Geiger Correctional Facility Tuesday night.
