Drivers Think Tow Is A Low Blow

SPOKANE, Wash. - Towing is a big business in Spokane, especially when so many vehicles are towed to get out them of the way of snow plows.

For the past few days the city of Spokane has been warning drivers who park on the streets of Browne's Addition to move their cars.

Plows the city uses are too large to make it down the narrow streets in the downtown neighborhood.

More than 30 cars were towed in the two days it took to plow Browne's Addition..

The cost to car owners for the two is $200, plus a $30 parking ticket, and the fees don't end there.

To get your car back, you also have to pay a half-day storage fee, with tax.

After the first day, you have to pay $45 for each additional day your car is impounded.

If your vehicle stays there for more than 20 days... they can actually auction off your car to someone else.

City officials say they don't control the fees charged by the tow truck companies.

Currently there are 24 registered tow truck operators who have a contract with the city after paying $300 in fees.

Each one is then dispatched as part of a rotation for any incident involving a vehicle needing a tow.

The city tells us they don't receive any income from the tow truck companies for the work.
