Romney: 'Misspoke' In Comment About The Poor

USATODAY.COM - Mitt Romney told a Nevada reporter yesterday that he "misspoke" earlier this week that he was "not concerned about the very poor."

The GOP front-runner was widely criticized by Republicans and Democrats for his original comment, made during a CNN interview following his victory in the Florida primary.

"I misspoke," Romney said Thursday in an interview with Nevada political reporter Jon Ralston. "I've said something that is similar to that but quite acceptable for a long time."

Romney has said in his campaign that his economic proposals are aimed at helping the middle class. He told CNN on Wednesday:

I'm not concerned about the very poor. We have a safety net there. If it needs repair, I'll fix it. I'm not concerned about the very rich. They're doing just fine. I'm concerned about the very heart of America, the 90-95% of Americans who right now are struggling.

Romney told Ralston he gives "thousands of interviews" and simply misspoke.
