SPD Investigation Leads To Prison For 'Teacher Grandpa'

SPOKANE, Wash. - A thorough investigation by Spokane Police Special Victims Unit (SVU) detectives led to the arrest, prosecution and sentencing of child daycare center worker 66-year-old Eugene R. Wright, also known as "Teacher Grandpa."

Wright, a former caretaker at the Head Start Program (Big Foot Child Center) on the Spokane Community College campus, plead  guilty this week to the charge of first degree rape of a child and was sentenced to 123 months to life in prison for his crimes.

The incident investigation started in August of 2010 with the report of a sexual assault involving a young girl attending the Head Start Program (Big Foot Child Center). 

Detective Stephanie Barkley extensively investigated the incident, interviewed and subsequently arrested Wright for 1 count of child rape. 

Sgt. Steve Wohl of the SVU credits the cooperative efforts among the Daycare on the SCC campus and other criminal justice partners for this very thorough and extensive investigation.
