Spokane Police Officers Arrest Strangulation Suspect

SPOKANE, Wash. - Spokane Police Officers arrested a subject for reportedly strangling his live in girlfriend after he fled into the East Central neighborhood of Spokane Saturday afternoon. He was arrested and booked for 2nd Degree Assault (Domestic Violence).

At about 12:40 pm patrol officers responded to a residence in the 2600 block of East 4th Avenue on the call of a person with a weapon. Officers Kyle Heuett and Shawn Pegram contacted the victim, while other officers searched the area after the suspect reportedly fled the house armed with a 9mm handgun. The victim reported that the suspect strangled her with his hands causing her to almost pass out and then later threw her into the side of a vehicle parked outside .

While this was going on, a large contingent of Patriot Guard members were attending funeral services for a military service member at a nearby church at 5th and Lacey. About half a dozen officers spent a half hour searching the area. Eventually Officer Heuett was able to reach the suspect on his cell phone and convince him to contact officers. He was hiding among houses in the neighborhood and revealed himself . He was taken into custody without incident. No gun was found on him.

The suspect, Wayne S. Cooper (28 year old male) was booked into jail for one count of 2nd Degree Assault (Domestic Violence).
