CONNECT WITH KLECK: Close Your Garbage Bin Or Pay Up!

AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. - In Thursday's Connect with Kleck, "Did you know that Waste Management charges you extra money if garbage in your can pushes the lid up?"

Rance didn't, he wrote Dan Kleckner on Wednesday saying quote:

"The people of Airway Heights were told that if their garbage cans are open more than half an inch they will be charged an extra four dollars 50 cents. We feel strongly that this is a ridiculous reason to nickel and dime us to death and thought you could look into it."

But as it turns out it's not just Waste Management that charges more, it's all five companies within Spokane County that charge more. Depending on your trash collector, the rate may differ. And though Rance knows it's just a little more than $4, it can add up after a while.

Rance contacted Waste Management about this matter and they credited his accounted back with the money he was charged, but they did say that if he did it again he would be charged. KHQ Local News reached out to Waste Management Thursday and their representative said that in most cases the customer will not get charged as each collection truck driver has 800 to 900 stops a day and does not have time to sit and weigh a bin to figure out how much extra they will charge the individual customer. Still, something to keep an eye open for especially with weekly garbage pick-up.
