SPOKANE, Wash. -
The WIAA said it is prepared to adjust the schedule of the State 1B girls basketball tournament in Spokane this week if a Jewish team wins its first round game on Thursday.
To accommodate Northwest Yeshiva High School, a school from Mercer Island, the WIAA said Tuesday it would move game times around to accommodate their Sabbath beliefs should they win on Thursday.
The same team forfeited a tournament game in 2010, saying they could not play on a day of fasting.
"The Association had a plan in place for such accommodations for several years," WIAA Executive Director Mike Colbrese said. "The WIAA is committed to upholding its mission statement and is determined to provide a positive experience for the member schools, student-athletes and fans at all of the State Events."
For Northwest Yeshiva, playing on a Friday night would violate their religious beliefs of the Sabbath. So instead, the WIAA said they would be willing to move their potential semifinal game to Friday afternoon instead. And if they win the semifinal game, the championship game would still be played Saturday night at 9 p.m. There is no conflict with that gametime.
If NW Yeshiva wins 1B game #3, they will play in 1B semifinal game #8 on Friday.
- 1B game #8 would be moved to 2:00 PM
- 1B game #6 would be moved to 3:45 PM
- 2B game #7 would be moved to 5:30 PM
- 2B game #8 would be moved to 7:15 PM
- 1B game #7 would be moved to 9:00 PM
Both Northwest Yeshiva's first round game and the 1B girls championship game will be broadcast on SWX-TV.
WIN-LOSE
If NW Yeshiva wins 1B game #3 then loses 1B semifinal game #8, they would play in 1B game #10 on Saturday.
- 1B game #10 would be moved to 7:30 PM
- the 1B boys championship game is scheduled for 7:00 PM on the east court; 1B girls game #10 would be played on the west court after the boys championship game begins
LOSE-WIN
If NW Yeshiva loses 1B game #3, then wins 1B game #6, they will play in 1B game #9 on Saturday.
- 1B game #9 would be moved to 7:30 PM
- the 1B boys championship game is scheduled for 7:00 PM on the east court; 1B girls game #10 would be played on the west court after the boys championship game begins
The WIAA's decision to make accommodations for Northwest Yeshiva comes at the same time high school officials in Texas said they would not change game times for Jewish school there. They said changing courts and game times would be too much of a burden, and that if the team chose not to play on the Sabbath they would be disqualified.
