Local School Rebounds!

SPOKANE, Wash. - In 2008 Rogers High School had a graduating rate of 49% of their seniors. In 2009 they raised that number to 50%. And in 2010, again, a raise to 55%. However the next year, 2011, the graduating percentage was 74%.

Principal Lori Wyborney said that things changed pretty drastically. "When we found out we were going to be on the list of lowest performing high schools because of our graduating rate, we then started to look at some more internal things that we could change," Wyborney said.

Wyborney said the school started younger than kids in freshman year, they went to their feeder schools. They go into middle schools and talk about the importance of going to college. Wyborney said this helps out when they get to high school. Wyborney said, "When they come in as freshman, we say, YOU WILL graduate in four years. No if's ands or buts about it."

What Wyborney didn't mention was the impact that she had directly on the school's success. That's something you have to ask her students. Senior Sarah Paden attributes the success to her principal. "When Ms. Wyborne became principal. everything changed. she cracked down on skipping, on tardies and everything. She did an amazing job," Paden said.
