Tornado Rips Through Michigan Town

DEXTER, Mich. (AP) - Residents of a community northwest of Ann Arbor, Mich., are sorting through the remains of houses that were destroyed by a tornado yesterday.

One Dexter resident says he's "thankful to God" that there were no serious injuries or deaths.

The local fire chief says that's "amazing." Loren Yates credits warnings that were issued ahead of the tornado.

The chief says authorities are confident that nobody is missing in the aftermath of the tornado that left more than 100 homes in splinters. He says most of those whose homes were damaged or destroyed are staying with friends or relatives, or at hotels.

Initial estimates are that the storm had winds of around 135miles an hour and that it lingered on the ground for about a half-hour, plowing a path about 10 miles long.

One resident, Ron Henderson, says he was watching television yesterday when the announcer said the storm might take aim at Dexter. He, his wife and their son didn't have time to get to the basement, and instead knelt by the bed as the tornado blew past.
