Local Soldier Receives Foreign Military Award

CHENEY, Wash - A soldier from Cheney, Washington has been honored by the French military for his bravery in Afghanistan.

Army Staff Sgt. Robert Wengeler is currently serving his third tour in Afghanistan. He is the crew chief on a Blackhawk helicopter responsible for MediVac operations. In September, he and his crew were called to rescue a group of injured French soldiers under attack in Afghanistan. One of the soldiers was dead when they arrived, but they were able to evacuate three others out of the war zone.

The French military was so grateful for their actions that they honored them with the French Cross of the Military Valor with Bronze Star at Forward Operating Base in Nijrab, Afghanistan on March 13th.

Wengeler's father still lives in Cheney, and says his son was excited to receive the award because it came from another country, and helps add to his prestigious career.

"He's a good soldier, and a good boy," said Lloyd Wengeler, father. "I'm proud of him, and I know his mother's awfully proud of him too."

Staff Sgt. Wengeler and his family are based at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. Wengeler will return from his deployment in August.
