French Police Say Terror Suspect Is Dead After 32-Hour Standoff

TOULOUSE, France (AP) - French police say a 32-hour standoff with an Islamic extremist in the city of Toulouse is over.

France's interior minister says Mohamed Merah jumped out a window, gun in hand, during a shootout with police.

That followed a night of explosions, some of which blew off the apartment's shutters. Officials describe the action as a tactic aimed at pressuring Merah to give up.

Police say Merah declared that he was proud of killing seven people in three shooting attacks from a motorcycle over the past 10 days.

Authorities say Merah was a French citizen of Algerian descent. He espoused a radical form of Islam and had traveled to Afghanistan and the Pakistani militant stronghold of Waziristan, where he claimed to have received training from al-Qaida.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy says an investigation is under way to see if the suspect had any accomplices.
