Sheriff's Dept: 'Body Found In Potholes Reservoir Likely Dan Toya'

Grant County Sheriff's Department Press Release:

Grant County Sheriff Tom Jones is saddened to make known Grant and Franklin county sheriff's deputies today found a body in Potholes Reservoir, and the body is likely that of missing Moses Lake resident Dan Toya who disappeared Dec. 23.

The body was found in Potholes Reservoir near the north shore west of Samson's Beach. Franklin County's remote controlled underwater robot found the body about 4 p.m. Grant County Sheriff's Search and Rescue divers recovered the body shortly thereafter. Identification and clothing on the body leads investigators to believe the body is Toya.

There are no obvious signs of external trauma or foul play. Detectives theorize Toya had fallen into the reservoir possibly while trying to rescue his golden retriever, Molly. Molly was found dead in Potholes Reservoir Mar. 25.

Grant County Coroner Craig Morrison has custody of the body and will complete an autopsy tomorrow. Coroner Morrison will make the final ruling on cause and manner of death, and also confirm the identity of the body.

"I am so sorry for Dan's family and friends," said Sheriff Tom Jones. "I hope this discovery brings them closure to a long three months of uncertainty. Dan was such a blessing in the lives of his loved ones, and I pray his family and friends find peace."
