PRESS RELEASE FROM THE SPOKANE POLICE DEPARTMENT: At 9:24 Thursday morning citizens began calling to report a serious collision near Spokane Community College. The driver of a SUV (Christopher Smith) was driving north on Greene, approaching Mission.

Smith hit a vehicle, drove onto the curb striking a light pole, then hit a pedestrian near the intersection and finally struck another vehicle in the intersection. Smith continued north beyond the intersection then fled the scene on foot.

The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital and treated for serious injuries but is in stable condition. The driver of the green Saturn and the silver Pontiac suffered minor injuries.

Collision investigators remained on scene for several hours collecting evidence.

Once investigators had completed the scene investigation, they continued their search for Smith. They located him in a Deer Park home, where he was arrested. He was booked into the Spokane County Jail for Vehicular Assault (a class B felony) along injury hit and run.

SPD Officers appreciate the cooperation and patience of citizens traveling in the area of Mission and Green this morning. Drivers were particularly conscious of officers while they conducted their investigation and helped those injured or involved in the hit and run collision.

PREVIOUS STORY:

SPOKANE, Wash. - A major intersection in northeast Spokane was closed for more than three hours Thursday following a collision involving an SUV that also hit and dragged a pedestrian.

It happened at around 9:45 a.m. at Mission & Greene near Spokane Community College.

Officers at the scene told KHQ photojournalist Nick Beber that the driver of a maroon GMC Envoy was going north and coming off the Freya bridge when, about 100 feet from intersection, the driver left the roadway, striking and dragging a pedestrian and then hitting a car that was turning right onto Greene from Mission.

The SUV also struck a power box, knocking out the traffic signal at the intersection for hours.

The driver of the SUV fled on foot and police were still looking for him. The driver of the car was not injured. The pedestrian was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

MUMBAI - A surgical team in India successfully removed a massive brain tumor from a man Thursday, weighing over 4 pounds. It was a lengthy, nearly seven-hour procedure and doctors believe it could be the heaviest ever recorded.  The tumor, which protruded from the top of the man's skull, was so large that it seemed “like a head on top of another head,” Trimurti Nadkarni, head of the neurosurgery department at Nair Hospital, told the Indian Express.
