Ducks Beat Cougars 6-2

EUGENE, Ore. – Kyle Garlick homered and drove in three runs as No. 6 Oregon defeated Washington State 6-2 in Pac-12 baseball, Friday night.

With the victory, the Ducks (27-10, 11-5) took the opener in the three-game series with the Cougars (18-16, 5-7 Pac-12).

"We didn't finish off hitters and didn't get a big hit when we had opportunities," Washington State Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "Give credit to Oregon for scoring most of its runs with two outs."

Oregon took a 2-0 lead in the first inning against Washington State starter Sean Hartnett (0-1) on a two-run triple by Garlick. Harnett was pressed into duty when J.D. Leckenby was injured before throwing a pitch. Leckenby is day-to-day.

In the third, Kyle Johnson led off with a triple and scored on a one-out single by Taylor Ard off Ducks' starter Alex Keudell (6-3).

Garlick led off the fourth with his fifth home run of the season to spark a three-run rally that gave Oregon a 5-1 lead. In the fifth, Collin Slaybaugh singled with one out for the Cougars. With two outs, Derek Jones was hit by a pitch and Adam Nelubowich followed with a run-scoring single.

The Ducks added a run in the eighth for a 6-2 lead before the Cougars threatened in the ninth. With two outs, Slaybaugh singled, Ard was hit by a pitch and Jones walked to load the bases. However, Jimmie Sherfy struck out Nelubowich to end the game.
