PULLMAN, Wash. -
The Washington State football team is officially finished with spring football, holding their final practice of the season Tuesday in Pullman.
The Cougars are coming off a successful scrimmage where the offense and defense both had shining moments. Now, it is up to the players to take what they learned from spring ball and put it into practice when August rolls around.
"The biggest thing is we need to give them as many tools as we can to go into the offseason to work on and polish their skills on," said coach Mike Leach. "If they do that and work really hard then we're going to come back when we start camp significantly better than we are now."
Leach said improvement away from the scrutinizing eyes of coaches is critical for this football team. Team leaders, Jeff Tuel included, will likely lead unofficial and voluntary practices until the team comes together officially at the end of summer.
Coaches were able to get in a few final post-scrimmage words at practice on Friday. The design of the schedule – having a practice after the scrimmage – is something Leach believes is a definite advantage.
"I like having the practice afterwards so you can watch and digest the film, and then you can make corrections and adjustments based on what we see on the film," he said.
