Copper Thieves Hit Spokane Speedway

Posted: Updated:

VALLEYFORD, Wash. - the Spokane County sheriff's office says copper thieves are not just targeting vacant scrap yards anymore. They're targeting homes; construction sites and now they have hit the Spokane Speedway.

Race promoter Joe Kopp has his work cut out for him.

Sometime in the last few days, thieves broke into a storage building, ripping out copper wiring and plumbing. They also took tools and race equipment, doing about $5,000 in damage.

With the first race less than two weeks away, a loss like this couldn't come at a worse time.

Kopp is getting a lot of help from friends and volunteers. He has a work day scheduled this weekend and says he will definitely be ready for race day.

Kopp is leasing the quarter mile flat track from Spokane County.

A total of ten races are scheduled through October.
