SPOKANE, WA - High school district baseball playoffs continued Thursday for the 4A schools. Gonzaga Prep stays alive, while Ferris advance to the subregionals, which start next week.
The second seeded Bullpups played top seed Mead at Avista Stadium in the late game. David Machtolf, a future Gonzaga University baseball player, was on the mound for Gonzaga Prep, and finished the night with eight strikeouts and just two hits. Machtolf actually had a no-hitter going through five innings. He was backed up by Anthony Gossline, whose basehit got the Bullpups on the board first in the fifth inning. Gonzaga Prep went on to win 2-0, and forces a game three in the series. That will be played tomorrow at Avista at four.
In the early game in district baseball, #3 Ferris faced off against #4 Central Valley. The Saxons were looking to close out the series after taking game one 3-0 on Tuesday. Tonight, Ferris's bats came alive. The Saxons scored 6 runs in the first three innings. Taylor Jones led the team with three hits and 4 RBI's on the night. Ben Goodwin had three RBI's of his own. Ferris pitcher Tim Yoshihara kept the Central Valley batters off their game and only gave up three hits. The Saxons beat the Bears 13-2, and move on to subregionals which start next week.
