SPOKANE, Wash. – Tension has been high near and around the Riverpark Apartments in the week following the random fatal stabbing of Sharlotte McGill. Nearby Tuffy's Trail is usually bustling this time of year with people enjoying a run or a leisurely walk. For the time being, very few use it, except for one man who wants to bring neighbors a little peace of mind.
Walking up and down the trail, Mike Zachman and a couple of friends, have created a sort of neighborhood watch. Armed with flashlights and dogs at night, they throw rocks into nearby bushes and make noise, hoping to flush anyone out who may be hiding.
Zachman is also helping Sharlotte's daughter by holding on to her mother's memorial. It had to be moved so constructions workers could continue their work.
McGill's family will bring the memorial with them when they visit the Okanogan Family Faire this fall, something Sharlotte did every year.
