Stanford Sweeps Washington State

Posted: Updated:

STANFORD, Calif. – Brett Mooneyham pitched seven-shutout innings and No. 11 Stanford completed a three-game series sweep of Washington State with a 6-1 victory, Sunday.

Mooneyham (6-4) gave up five hits, walked one and struck out three. Stanford (32-14, 14-10 Pac-12) scored a run in the second and another in the fifth against Washington State (24-23, 9-14 Pac-12) starter Kyle Swannack (3-4).

In the sixth, the Cardinal loaded the bases with one out against Cougar reliever Kellen Camus. Spencer Jackson came on to face Dominic Jose and gave up a grand slam as Stanford took a 6-0 lead.

"We didn't put pressure on Stanford's defense all weekend," Washington State Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "We allowed Stanford to play loose and that's how we got swept."

Washington State scored its lone run in the eighth against Cardinal reliever A.J. Vanegas. Kyle Johnson led off with a double, took third on a single by Nate Blackham and scored on a ground out by Taylor Ard.

The Cougars collected three hits and were issued a walk in the first inning, but failed to score. Blackham was cut down at the plate trying to score on a single by Derek Jones with one out and Tommy Richards flied out with the bases loaded.
