Idaho coach Robb Akey will attend the funeral of Ken McRoyal, the Vandal football player shot and killed at a party in Los Angeles last weekend.

News of his player's death came as a shock, as Akey said McRoyal went to California to see his 1-year-old daughter and family just days after learning he had earned a scholarship for his senior year in Moscow.

"All I can tell is that I'm sick to death of what has happened and what has transpired," said Akey on a teleconference on Monday afternoon. "I think that's the way our football team feels, and I think that's what a lot of people feel right now. It's a senseless loss. There's a lot of disbelief. It's up to us to provide some strength and some leadership, and we're working hard to help pull our team members through this."

About 125 students attended a vigil at the Kibbie Dome on the university's campus Monday night. Several of McRoyal's friends and supporters left messages on his Facbeook page:

"I miss you Ken <3," wrote one friend. Someone else wrote "You went through much more than a lot of us could imagine but you survived one after another…"

A former teammate, Demaundray Woolridge wrote, "R.I.P. My prayers go out to your family. The Vandal Nation lost a Brother. I'm gonna miss you."

Detectives in California still don't know whether McRoyal was the intended victim in the shooting. The Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday that police are looking for four men who argued with McRoyal and then fled after one fired the shots early Sunday morning.
