Search For Sharlotte McGill's Killer: Two Weeks Later

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. - More than two weeks after a local mother was randomly attacked and murdered, 55-year-old Sharlotte McGill's family and friends will honor her memory during a memorial service this Saturday.

The service is set to take place May 19 at the Spokane Club starting at 10 am. The service is open to the public but Spokane Club employees request that no one takes pictures or films the memorial.

As of Thursday, detectives with the Spokane Police department said no new information would be released in Sharlotte McGill's investigation until there was a break in the case.

Two weeks after her death, a killer is still on the loose.

McGill was murdered Thursday, May 3, while walking her dog, Lily, on Tuffy's trail, a makeshift trail near her apartment on South Riverton where she regularly walked.

While on the trail, a man jumped out of the bushes and repeatedly stabbed McGill, for no apparent reason, in her arms, chest, and forehead. Police confirmed the attack was random. McGill screamed and stumbled onto a nearby street. Several people nearby, including her daughter Billie McKinney, rushed to her aid.

Before she died, McGill managed to give a description of her attacker: a black man, in his 30s, with a bad eye. Witnesses said they saw a man matching that description on the trail that morning wearing black pants and black hooded jacket.

McGill died shortly after on the way to the hospital.

On Friday, the day after the murder, Interim Spokane Police Chief Scott Stephens announced he would devote the entire major crimes team to investigate the murder ...

That same day, and based on McGill's dying description of her killer, police detained Robert Yovino for questioning. Court documents show Yovino matched the description of the killer, was evasive with police, and appeared to be squinting out of one eye. Police later released him and said he was not a suspect.

On the Sunday after her death, friends and family gathered for a memorial outside of McGill's home.

In the two weeks that bring us to today, there have been some new developments including a new theory that McGill's killer could be a transient or car prowler who scrapped batteries. Police have received hundreds of tips and there have been several "sightings" of the killer. However, two weeks later, there are still no suspects and no motive.

Right now, the search for a killer continues as the family of Sharlotte McGill prepares to lay their loved one to rest.

If you have any information about the case, call Crime Check at 456-2233 or 800-222-TIPS.
