Local Deputies: Impaired Driver Said He Drank 'A Lot'

Posted: Updated:

PRESS RELEASE FROM THE SPOKANE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE: On Saturday morning May 19th, at 4:30 a.m., Sheriff's Deputies Ruff and Kenoyer responded to a one-vehicle collision near the intersection of Hatch and Handy Road.

When the deputies arrived on scene they found a Jeep Cherokee crashed into the trees east of Handy and Hatch Road. A witness advised dispatch he had seen the vehicle at the intersection a half hour earlier. He said the driver was just sitting in the driver's seat, not moving. When he drove back through the area he saw the vehicle had crashed near the intersection.

When the deputies approached the vehicle, they were both able to smell a strong odor of intoxicants coming from the vehicle. They contacted 22-year-old Warren Anderson inside the vehicle and attempted to have him exit the driver's seat.

The deputies quickly realized Anderson was extremely intoxicated. Anderson refused the deputies orders to exit the vehicle. However, after Anderson was placed under arrest for DUI he began to cooperate with the deputies.

Deputy Ruff spoke with Anderson and asked him how much he had to drink.  Anderson told Deputy Ruff he could not remember, but "it was a lot". Anderson was not sure where he was at, did not know he had been in a collision and reminded deputies he had drank "a lot" that evening.

While inventorying Anderson's vehicle prior to having it impounded, Deputy Ruff located a pill on burned foil. Anderson told Deputy Ruff it was a "Roxi" and that he did not really know what he was smoking. After checking the markings on the pill in a drug identification book, Deputy Ruff determined it was a Roxicodone, a schedule II narcotic.

Anderson was booked into Spokane County Jail for the charge of Driving Under The Influence of Drugs and/or Alcohol and Possession of a Controlled Substance, Roxicodone.
