PROVO, Utah – Gonzaga went on a tear in the middle innings, scoring 13 runs from the third to the seventh and Marco Gonzales did the rest on the mound in a 13-1 win over BYU Friday night.
With one out in the third, Steven Halcomb reached on an error and after a Royce Bolinger groundout also moved to third on a wild pitch. Alex Stanford double to left field to score Halcomb. Stanford moved to third on a wild pitch and scored as well on a throwing error by the catcher to put the Zags ahead 2-0.
Clayton Eslick and Halcomb both singled to start off the fifth. Eslick moved over to third on a fly-out by Bolinger. Stanford came through again, hitting a single to left field to bring home Eslick. Andy Hunter grounded out, moving the two runners over. Marco Gonzales struck a single into left field to bring around both runners for Gonzaga. Maxx Garrett doubled to score Gonzales and attempted to take third on the throw, but was thrown out for the third out with the score 6-0.
The Bulldogs got right back to work loading the bases to leadoff the sixth with a Billy Moon single, Alex Bonczyk reach-on-error and Eslick walk. With nowhere to put him, Eslick was hit by a pitch to score Moon. Bolinger ripped a double down the left field line to score two more. Stanford grounded out to second, allowing Halcomb to score. Hunter added a double of his own to bring in Bolinger. After a Brock Slavin groundout to move Hunter over, Garrett singled to bring him in making it a 12-0 lead for Gonzaga.
Halcomb hit a one-out single and moved to third on a wild pitch and passed ball. Bolinger brought him in with a single through the left side.
BYU added a late run in the ninth on a passed ball with two outs by reliever Sean Santschi.
Gonzales had another solid outing on the mound and at the plate. He pitched an eight-inning gem, only allowing four hits and striking out 12. The Olerud watch list member also contributed 2 RBIs on the day.
BYU Starter Marc Oslund gave up six runs (four earned) on nine hits in his five innings. Reliever Matt Milke couldn't record an out surrendering five runs on two hits.
Gonzaga will face off with BYU for a series win tomorrow at noon.
