Marietta Crushes Whitworth 13-2

by Brad Wall

APPLETON, Wisc. – Marietta pounded 22 hits off of Whitworth in route to a 13-2 win over the Pirates Friday night, putting them one game away from elimination.

After being contained for the first two innings, the defending Champion Pioneers exploded, scoring in six of the last seven innings. Kirby Becker lead the way for the team with five hits and an RBI. Alex Toth had four hits and he and Evan Brockmeier each had 3 RBIs on the night.

Whitworth salvaged two late runs in the eighth when Gerhard Muelheims hit a two-out double and scored on a double by Tyler Pfeffer. Landon Scott singled up the middle to bring around Pfeffer and make the score 9-2, but Marietta poured on four more in the ninth to go ahead 13-2.

Austin Blaski pitched six innings for the Pioneers and gave up just two hits in a shutout effort.

Whitworth (30-15-1) will take on Christopher Newport (Va.) (34-9) in a loser-out game tomorrow at 1:15 pm (CDT).
