‘Stupid’ Criminal Caught On Camera At Discount Lumber

SPOKANE, Wash. – A brazen thief was caught on camera, after camera, after camera.

It happened around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday while he was burglarizing the Discount Lumber store on North Market.

Unfortunately, this isn't the first time the family-owned business has been targeted; they tell KHQ they've been burglarized 8 or 9 times since last year, with damages and losses totaling almost $50,000.

But this time is different.

Employees got a good look at the burglar's face – and van – thanks to the burglar himself.

"The guy is obviously one of the stupidest people on earth," said vice president, Mark Gatlin.

Not only did the thief take his time, as he was on the lot for about an hour, but he was caught on several of the security cameras.

But when he saw one, and tried to take it out with a piece of lumber, he missed.  Instead, he knocked the camera down to the perfect angle to give employees a closer look at him – and his van.

"This guy is so stupid, he hits the camera and the camera goes straight down and looks right at his face," Gatlin added.

But the thief doesn't hurry off.  Instead, he takes 15 minutes to load 2x4 studs into his van, with traffic buzzing on the street just yards away.

"He's actually counting the 2x4's in his van," Gatlin said with disbelief.  "You know, like it really matters, I mean you're robbing a place, why don't you just throw them in?"

Then, the suspect sits in his van for a few minutes, before he hides in the yard.  He eventually comes back to the van to load up some more lumber.

To cap it all off, the thief rips a ‘no smoking' sign off the lumber stack, and uses it to cover up his license plate – which has been sitting out for an hour.

"It's pretty irritating, really truthfully," Gatlin said.  "It's hard enough to stay in business as it is, and then you have scumbags robbing you."

In total, the guy got away with 80 2x4 studs, a wheelbarrow, and chop saw.  He also destroyed 6 cameras and a 20-foot gate, bringing total damages and losses to around $10,000.

Discount lumber – and its roughly 20 employees – hoping this time will be the last.

"It puts a huge strain on my business.  Huge strain," explained Gatlin.  "You spend your whole morning going through tape, looking for what's gone, and then you don't really even know what's missing until the next day."

Gatlin says if you live or drive near the Discount Lumber property, keep an eye out.  If you see the gate open after hours, or someone inside, he says chances are, they're being burglarized again.

If you see anything suspicious, or recognize the man caught on camera in this case, call police.  He's described as white, 5'8" or 5'9", roughly 200 lbs, with short blonde hair.
