Knitting Helps Women In Need

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. - Fridays at the Women's Hearth in Spokane are special days. It's the one day a week where women can come, sit around a circle, and knit together. Half of the women that the Women's Hearth serves are homeless, and this is one place that they can come and feel welcome. "A lot of times you go into places and you feel if you are not a part of a certain group, you are not accepted. We try to accept each other." Beth Kamstra said.

Kamstra has been coming to the "Knitting Circle" at the Women's Hearth for four years. She makes blankets, and donates most of them. She said that crocheting helps her stay sane. "This kind of helps, I am not focus on my problems, I am focusing on something else." Kamstra says.

One of the organizers of the knitting circle, Ruth Palnick, said that it is the family feel of the group that makes it special. "When you are on the street, no one ever misses you, no one ever says we missed you on Friday, there is such a sense of family here and that's what makes you come," Palnick said.

And Kamstra not only comes for the family feel, she comes for the therapy. "[Being] able to open up about problems, to realize that we do matter, sometimes you get caught up thinking that you don't matter, it doesn't matter what you are doing, but with being able to get yarn and being able to donate, I actually could feel that I could do something important," Kamstra said.

Kamstra moved out of the Hope House in December and is finally making a blanket for herself, for her new home, and her new bed.

If you would like to donate yarn, just drop it off to the Women's Hearth in Downtown Spokane at 920 West Second Avenue.
