COEUR d' ALENE, Idaho - A Coeur d'Alene Ironman triathlete has died after being pulled from the water in the swimming portion of the race.

KHQ confirmed with the Kootenai County coroner's office the identity of the man as being 44-year-old Sean Murphy of Seattle. The coroner would not confirm a cause of death or when Murphy died. However officials with the Ironman did confirm Murphy died on Tuesday night at Kootenai County Medical center.

Jessica Weidensall with the Ironman public relations released this statement.

"We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of an athlete following IRONMAN Coeur d'Alene. The athlete required medical attention during the swim portion of Sunday's race and was transported to Kootenai Medical Center where he was treated until Tuesday. The cause of death is unknown at this time. On behalf of all of us in the triathlon community, we mourn his death and send our condolences to his loved ones."

Neither local race officials nor the Kootenai County coroner would explain the circumstances of his death. Look for more coverage right here on KHQ.com.
