A new president for Mexico

Posted: Updated:

THE VOTES HAVE BEEN TALLIED AND NEW PRESIDENT OF MEXICO IS ENRIQUE PENA NIETO OF THE PRI PARTY. THE PARTY THAT RULED MEXICO WITH A TIGHT GRIP FOR MOST OF THE LAST CENTURY IS BACK INTO POWER, PROMISING A GOVERNMENT THAT WILL BE MODERN, RESPONSIBLE AND OPEN TO CRITICISM. PENA NIETO WON WITH ONLY 38 PERCENT WHICH IS ALL THAT WAS NEEDED WITHIN A THREE PARTY POLITICAL SYSTEM.

THE PRI PARTY RULED FOR 71 YEARS AND WAS KNOWN FOR COERCION AND CORRUPTION, BUT ALSO FOR BUILDING MEXICO'S INSTITUTIONS AND SOCIAL SERVICES.

MANY US IMMIGRANTS EXPRESSED SHOCK AT RETURN OF MEXICO'S PRI PARTY.

THE VAST MAJORITY OF THE 40,000 MEXICAN EXPATRIATES WHO VOTED IN SUNDAY'S ELECTION CAST BALLOTS AGAINST PENA NIETO.

IN HIS VICTORY SPEECH PRESIDENT-ELECT ENRIQUE PENA NIETO SAID, WE'RE A NEW GENERATION. THERE IS NO RETURN TO THE PAST. IT'S TIME TO MOVE ON FROM THE COUNTRY WE ARE TO THE MEXICO WE DESERVE.

YOU CAN READ MORE ABOUT THE MEXICAN ELECTIONS IN THE CURRENT ISSUE OF TU DECIDES THE BILINGUAL NEWSPAPER.
