PREVIOUS STORY:

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. - Emergency crews called off the search for a person who went missing while tubing on the Spokane River Monday evening.

The first reports came in just after 7:00PM of a person struggling in the river near the Flora Trailhead in Spokane Valley.

Within 15 minutes emergency crews from Spokane and Spokane Valley had boats on the water and teams on multiple bridges searching for the missing person.

He's described as a 21-year-old white man wearing black shorts and possibly a black shirt.

Witnesses say he was floating with a group of friends, none of which were wearing life jackets. At some point the missing man became separated from his group and began struggling in the fast moving water.

An experienced kayaker who happened to be in the area gave chase after saw his inner tube flip. He got to within about 25 feet but could not reach the man.

With thunder and lightning, along with darkness falling, crews had to call off the search because of the unsafe conditions for rescuers on the water.

While floating the river in this area is extremely popular during the summer, rescuers say conditions are dangerous.

According to officials on scene,  only about half of everyone they saw on the water Monday was wearing a life jacket even though they are required by law.

Crews hope to continue the search Tuesday morning but right now they say its looking more like a recovery than a rescue.
