SCRAPS Rescues Trapped Dog In Liberty Lake Area

LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. - On Wednesday Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service (SCRAPS) responded to a request for assistance in the Liberty Lake area. The owners of a German Shepherd named "Coco" reported that their pet had become trapped in some rocks and they were unable to free it.

When SCRAPS Animal Protection Officers (APO) Nicole Montano and Francie Rapier arrived on the scene they were joined by personnel from the Spokane Valley Fire Department and hiked up a rugged hillside to where the dog was trapped in a rock crevice. A quick inspection showed that the dog's head had become wedged about two-feet into a hole.

Rapier crawled into the hole and spent 20 minutes trying to free the dog while firefighters assisted. She manipulated the dog's head in a way that allowed her to pull the dog out of the crevice.

Apparently the dog had chased a porcupine into the rocks and had a muzzle and mouth full of quills. Upon closer inspection Rapier found that the porcupine was still hiding in the hole just out of the dog's reach.

The dog has been returned to its owners and taken to the family veterinarian.
