KENNEWICK, Wash. -- For the first time in eight years, an unlimited hydroplane driver other than Dave Villwock or Steve David won the Lamb Weston Columbia Cup. That driver was Jimmy Shane. The emotion of a first-time champion showed.

"It's crazy," said the U-5 Graham Trucking driver. "This is something I've always dreamed about as a little kid. Just to be here and do this is pretty cool."

"I drove it as hard as I possibly could, wishing the start/finish line was five feet closer. If it was five feet closer, I would have been the one holding that first place trophy, but I got beat by a great guy," Kelly said.

"I've known Jimmy since he was in his mommy's belly because I used to race with his mom and dad. They're swell people, and I've been speaking to Jimmy on the phone a lot and encouraging him, and I'm just so proud of him. He's a humble fellow. That's a terrific race boat driver," added U-6 Oh Boy! Oberto driver Steve David.

David was fastest, but officials say he jumped ahead of a score up buoy.

"We're going to challenge that and we'd like to see any video they have. If they don't have video, we're going to really protest the daylights out of it because this happened to us in another race and they didn't have any video of it, and there's no excuse if they don't have any video. You know, we had plenty of steam to beat everybody here," David said.

As of Monday, H1 Unlimited said there is no appeal yet.
