KHQ.COM - Citizens in northern parts of Spokane County and in Stevens County may not be able to reach 9-1-1 service as a result of what appears to be a widespread failure of phone service.

Authorities say citizens who need medical or other assistance in these areas who cannot reach 9-1-1 should go directly to a local fire station or police station to report any emergency.

Stevens County Fire District 1 and Spokane County Fire District 4 stations from Deer Park to the north are staffing their stations now to assist citizens.

Hard line and cell phone services may be affected in these areas. Emergency officials are attempting to work with phone providers to identify the magnitude of the problem and get it resolved.
