MOSCOW, Idaho -

The Idaho Vandals began a new season Thursday, debuting new, shiny black helmets on the first day of fall camp.

Akey's Army, as the Vandals are known, are looking to wash away the disappointing 2011 season – a season during which they lost a lot of close games to finish 2-10.

This year's motto? "Finish."

But on Thursday, they were just excited to start.

"We're going to keep everybody guessing – that's my goal," said coach Robb Akey. "I'm very happy that we're out here today. It feels like this has been a long time coming. In a lot of ways it has been a long, long summer. It always is for a football coach anyway. But now we're out here on the field and things are going to get great. We get 29 opportunities and if we blink we're going to be ready for that first game real quick."

That first game is Aug. 30 against Eastern Washington in the Kibbie Dome.
