FERNDALE, Wash. (AP) - A 37-year-old man with a criminal record has pleaded guilty to illegally possessing a gun, one week after accidentally shooting himself in the groin.
The Bellingham Herald reports Friday reports that Orlando "Casper" Ortiz accepted the recommended sentence of one year and 10 months in prison. He pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm. His final sentence will be handed down later this month.
Authorities say that after they responded to a 911 call at his trailer, Ortiz first claimed he had found the 12-gauge shotgun outside his trailer and began playing with it when it went off.
But police found "several chunks of flesh and blood" as well as shotgun shells in his bedroom.
Ortiz has previous drug convictions.
