Rookie camp invites all hoping for shot to make Americans' roster

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash. -- Day two of the Tri-City Americans rookie camp wrapped up from the Toyota Center Thursday. It featured 38 rookies all competing for one thing - a shot at a main camp invite.

Of the 38, only seven received invites to the main camp. Last year only two rookies ended up making the Americans roster. That was goalie Eric Comrie and forward Brian Williams. Of the seven invited to this year's main camp, they all have the same goal in mind, which is a shot to make the Americans' team.

"It's exciting, you're playing with top players and working hard. Maybe getting hit everywhere but it'll be fun with those guys and just making yourself a better hockey player," said Tyler MrKonjic, a 2011 Americans draft pick.

"I don't really know what to expect. I didn't go last year so I know the guys there are going to be bigger, stronger. Some of them maybe NHL ready players in a few years," said Kody Ichinaga, a 2011 Americans draft pick.

"Bigger stronger guys. It's going to be really fun. I love the intensity of that and I'm really excited to play some of the veterans too," said Braden Purtill, a 2011 Americans draft pick.

The real fun begins on Friday. That is when main camp starts. 39 players will be competing, including 19 returning players from last year's Americans' squad. The camp runs all the way through next Friday and it is open to the public. All fans are encouraged to comedown to the Toyota Center to attend.
