Gonzaga's Gunsolus Named MVP

PORTLAND, Ore. – Gonzaga University baseball player Mitchell Gunsolus was named the 2012 West Coast League Most Valuable Player Monday.

This summer for the Wenatchee Applesox, the third baseman led the league with 48 RBI while hitting .371 with 3 home runs.

The Kenmore, Wash. native led his team to the 2012 WCL title. The left-handed hitter hit .333 in the post-season with a homer against the Corvallis Knights. The AppleSox finished the season 41-19 and ranked No. 6 by Perfect Game USA in its end-of-season rankings.

Gunsolus was also named first-team All-WCL as a third baseman. In July, Gunsolus took part in the WCL All-Star Game.

This award marks the fourth time in WCL history a Gonzaga baseball player was named MVP. In 2011 Alex Standford of Walla Walla was named MVP and before him Drew Heid and Darin Holcomb of Spokane were honored in 2008 and 2006, respectively.

Other Zags honored in WCL post-season awards were sophomore pitcher Derek Callahan on the All-WCL second team and senior shortstop Steven Halcomb on the All-WCL honorable mention list.
