Chiefs Drop Season Opener to Everett

The Spokane Chiefs dropped their first game of the pre-season in a 5-1 decision to the Everett Silvertips in Everett's Holiday Inn Pre-Season Classic.

The Chiefs roster featured 13 first year players including Nakeh Lamothe, a 17-year-old from Edmonton who scored Spokane's first goal. The Chiefs also played four 16-year-olds who were selected in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft; left wing Markson Bechtold (3rd round), defensemen Jacob Cardiff (7th round) and Colton Bobyk (10th round) and goaltender Trevor Martin (9th round).

Everett scored twice in both the first and second periods and once in the third. Their first two goals came 1:15 apart when Stathis Soumelidis and Josh Winquist tallied at 8:40 and 9:55. Manraj Hayer made it 3-0 at 3:48 of the second and Reid Petryk pushed it to 4-0 at 6:24.

Lamothe,Spokane's fourth round selection in 2010, put the Chiefs on the board at 2:28 of the third with assists from fellow rookies Riley Whittingham and Adam Helewka.

Trent Lofthouse pushed the Everett lead to 5-1 at 8:46.

Rookie Garret Hughson started in net for Spokane and stopped eight shots in 12 opportunities in 33:58. Martin was 12 for 13 in save opportunities in 26:51.

Spokane outshot Everett 27-25. Neither team scored on the power play as Spokane was 0-6 and and Everett 0-4.

The Chiefs will play their second game of the weekend on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 in Everett versus the Seattle Thunderbirds.
