Spouse: Lela Kreidler
Religion: United Church of Christ
Date of Birth: 09-28-43

Background: Doctor of Optometry, Group Health Cooperative (1972-1992); North Thurston School District Board Member (1973-1977); Washington State Representatives (1977-1985), Washington State Senator (1985-1993); US House of Representatives (1993-1995); Insurance Commissioner (2001 to present date).

Please describe your top 5 priorities if elected to the role of Insurance Commissioner:

1. I strongly believe that the people of our state deserve quality, affordable health insurance. I want to continue working with consumer, business and legislative leaders to make health care reform a reality in 2014.

2. Nonprofit health insurers shouldn't be allowed to continue to hoard billions of dollars in excess profits while calling for double-digit rate increases. I'm committed to continue the fight for individuals and small employers to be able to find health care coverage at affordable rates.

3. People who buy auto, homeowner, health and other kinds of insurance in our state have a right to expect insurance companies to fully pay claims under those policies in a timely manner. I will continue to provide free advocacy help to consumers whose claims are unfairly delayed or denied.

4. I will closely monitor the financial condition of insurance companies who sell policies in this state to make sure that they aren't involved in risky investments and that they maintain enough money in reserves to pay current and future claims.

5. I want to make it possible for individuals and businesses to use our website to get all the information they need to make informed choices about insurance, to make complaints against companies, and to do business with our office.
