Americans let lead slip in shootout loss to Seattle

KENNEWICK, Wash. -- Seattle's Justin Myles denied Tri-City's Philip Tot was denied in the third round of the shootout as the Tri-City Americans (2-2) fall to the Seattle Thunderbirds (1-1) 4-3 in game four of the Red Lion Hotels Pre-Season Tournament.

The Americans got off to a fast start in the first, with Jesse Mychan scoring on a power play and assisted by Philip Tot and Patrick Holland. Mitch Topping added another goal 24 seconds later on an assist from Malte Strömwall and Brian Williams. Just before the end of the period, Mychan scored again, assisted again by Tot and by goalie Brenden Fiebelkorn.

Tri-City struggled in the second period, only managing two shots. Seattle's Jesse Forsberg scored a goal early in the period on the power play to cut the Americans lead 3-1 heading into the third period.

Seattle completed the comeback in the third, adding two more power play goals in the third, one by Alexander Delnov and the other by Roberts Lipsbergs. This tied the game up at three and sent the game into overtime.

Riley Sheen and Roberts Lipsbergs scored while Marcus Messier missed and Patrick Holland scored to make it 2-1 going into the third round of the shootout. Brenden Troock missed his shot, but Tot couldn't convert, allowing Seattle to squeak out a 4-3 win.

Seattle will play their final game of the tournament tomorrow, September 8 against the Portland Winterhawks at 3 p.m. Tri-City will play in the final game of the pre-season tournament tomorrow night against the Spokane Chiefs at 7 p.m.
