Americans lose preseason finale 8-1 in Kelowna

Posted: Updated:

Kelowna, B.C. - The Tri-City Americans (2-4-0-1) scored the first goal of the game, but the Kelowna Rockets (2-2-0-2) scored the next eight goals en route to an 8-1 victory in the Americans final pre-season game.

It didn't take long for the Americans to score, with Lucas Nickles scoring 18 seconds into the game. But Kelowna answered quickly, as JT Barnett scored 52 seconds into the game and tied the game at one. Wil Tomchuk was penalized for checking from behind, and the Rockets capitalized on the power play as Austin Ferguson scored midway through the first. Kelowna had nine more shots in the period, but only had a 2-1 lead after one period.

Kelowna would add another goal in the second period when Dylen McKinlay put the puck past Luke Lee-Knight for a 3-1 lead.

The Rockets poured it on in the third period, scoring five goals. Myles Bell started off the scoring in the third, followed by two more goals from Barnett to complete his hat-trick for the night. Bell added his second goal of the night and period and Carter Rigby added the last goal, putting the finishing touches on the 8-1 win.

Lee-Knight would like to forget this night, saving 31 of 39 shots. Kelowna's Jordon Cooke allowed one goal and making 18 saves in the win.
Tri-City begins the regular season on Saturday, Sept. 22, when the Americans take on the rival Spokane Chiefs, with the puck drop at 7 p.m. at the Toyota Center. Tickets are available online at Ticketmaster.com, at any Ticketmaster outlet, at the Toyota Center box office or at Fred Meyer outlets. The game will also be broadcast on TV on MeTV 42.2 and Charter Channel 280, as well as on the radio on NewsTalk 870 AM.
