Your school can help bring the magic of reading home for children in our community by getting involved with the 16th Annual Success By 6 Book Drive! KHQ-TV, with support from our Success By 6 sponsors AmericanWest Bank, American Family Insurance, Hometown Chevy Dealers, and Rockwood, Deaconess and Valley Hospital, is collecting books to be given to children who don't have books at home—and we would like to invite your school to help.
The KHQ Success By 6 Children's Book Drive is an annual event designed to collect new or gently used books for children age birth to 6 who may not have any books in their home. Books will be given to the Success By 6 Book Bank, which provides books to agencies, groups and organizations that serve young children. Over the past eleven years, the Success By 6 Book Bank has distributed over 100,000 books to children in the community.
In 2006, KHQ created a "Book Drive School Challenge" portion of the book drive, offering an opportunity for elementary schools to challenge one another to see who could collect the most new or gently used books. In 2009, Browne Elementary, Hamblen Elementary, Chattaroy Elementary and Colbert Elementary students have collected over 12,000 books that were donated to the Success By 6 Book Bank. In 2010, Shamble Elementary, Indian Trail Elementary, Greenacres Elementary and Sunrise Elementary collected over 24,000 books! Last year, Moran Prairie and Mullan Road collected 4,476 books.
We'll encourage students to give a good book a new life by donating books from home that they've outgrown, or, if they would like, purchasing inexpensive new or gently used books to donate to the drive. We like to have each school provide us with a daily count of books collected.
"Success By 6" is KHQ-TV's award winning community service campaign that strives to help parents make the most of the early years of their child's life. The campaign focuses on the importance of parents and children reading together to prepare a child for success in school.
