Pole Barn Destroyed, Home Damaged In Late-Night Fire

SUNCREST, Wash. - A  pole barn is a total loss and a home sustained serious damage in a fire Sunday night northwest of Spokane in Suncrest. The fire broke out just before 8:00pm in the detached pole barn.

The homeowner was not home at the time of the fire, and a passerby called 911. By the time firefighters arrived on scene, the fire had moved from the pole barn to the home. During the course of the battle, a firefighter suffered minor injuries when something fell on his head. He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Crews say the firefighter never lost consciousness, but was transported to the hospital as a precaution and because that is protocol whenever a firefighter is injured during the course of fighting a fire, regardless the severity of that injury. Fire Chief Mike Bucy tells KHQ the home is likely also a total loss but they should be able to save many of the items inside the home. The fire remains under investigation at this hour.
